Many homes are built from sandstone, with stone walls, sills, steps and garden edging to match. Over the decades that stone picks up black staining, moss and lichen, most of all on the shaded side and under trees. Sandstone is soft next to brick, which is why we spot-test stone before using any chemical, and why we’re honest when a mark is part of the stone’s age rather than dirt.
