Why travertine needs a different clean
Travertine and limestone are calcium-based. Acid reacts with the stone itself, so an acidic cleaner, including many supermarket pool-deck and driveway products, etches it. The dull patches that result cannot be washed off. Travertine gets a neutral or alkaline clean, applied at low pressure.
Around a Northern Beaches pool the stone is also dealing with pool-water splash and chemicals, salt in the air, leaf litter, and algae in the shaded corners. Grout lines and the natural holes hold water longer than the stone around them, so that is where staining tends to start.
Cleaned and sealed as it is
Travertine has natural holes and is usually filled when it is laid. We clean and seal what is there. We do not refill, hone or resurface it. If fill has gone missing or you want a honed finish, that is a stonemason’s job and we will say so rather than quote around it.
How a travertine clean and seal runs
1. Identify the stone, then test patch
Travertine, limestone and concrete that looks like either are treated differently, so we confirm what it is first. The cleaner and the sealer are tried on a small out-of-sight section and left to dry.
2. Neutral-pH clean at low pressure
Decks, terraces, balconies and steps are soft washed and cleaned with a method suited to natural stone. Controlled, low-pressure work keeps the surface intact and gets into the joints without blasting out the fill.
3. Let it dry
The stone, the joints and the holes all have to dry before sealing, or the sealer will not penetrate and can go cloudy. That is why a proper travertine job is normally two visits, with the second timed around the weather.
4. Seal with a penetrating sealer
We use SiF penetrating sealers: Australian-made, water-based, breathable and non-film-forming. Where water repellence is the priority that is a silane-siloxane sealer. It sits inside the stone, so the travertine keeps its natural look. A colour-enhancing finish is available if you want the deeper, wet-stone tone.
5. How to look after it
A sealed deck wants a neutral-pH cleaner, not bleach or an acid-based product. We leave you knowing what to use and what to keep off it, including spilled pool chemicals.
Pool decks and slip
A penetrating sealer sits in the stone rather than on it, so it does not leave a glossy film on the surface, which is the usual cause of a slick finish. It is not a slip-resistance treatment, though. If slip resistance matters on your pool surround, say so when you ask for a quote and we will talk it through before anything goes on.
Timing
Pool decks and terraces are often booked in spring, ahead of summer and the Christmas break. Because the stone has to dry between the clean and the seal, we schedule around the forecast, so asking early gives you more room to choose a date.
Recent travertine work
Newport: 108 m² of travertine
Pool deck, terrace, balconies and front steps, cleaned and sealed. Sandstone rock and retaining walls on the same property were soft washed for moss and algae at the same time.
Mona Vale: travertine path and pool surrounds
The travertine entrance path and the pool surrounds were cleaned as part of a full pre-sale exterior clean.
Manly: apartment travertine and spa area
Travertine tiles and the spa area soft washed and cleaned with low-pressure, controlled methods suited to natural stone, as part of a pre-sale clean.
Where we do it
We clean and seal travertine and limestone across the Northern Beaches: Newport, Avalon, Palm Beach, Mona Vale, Collaroy, Manly, Freshwater and Balgowlah, and on the North Shore and in the Eastern Suburbs. Not sure whether it is travertine, limestone or something that looks like it? Send a photo.
What it costs
Clean and seal is priced on area, condition and which sealer the surface needs, not on a flat rate per square metre. A shaded path thick with lichen is a different job from a clean surface that just needs protecting.
As a guide: smaller jobs start from $1,800. Most whole-frontage jobs (path, driveway, balconies, council strip) land between $3,000 and $4,500. It is usually two visits, because the stone has to dry before it is sealed.
Large terraces and pool surrounds go up from there. A job like the 108 m² Newport travertine is quoted on its area and condition, from photos or a site visit.
You get a quote inside 24 hours, from photos or a site visit.
Common questions
Can I use a normal pool-deck or driveway cleaner on travertine?
Not if it is acidic. Travertine and limestone are calcium-based, so acid etches them and leaves dull patches that cannot be washed off. Use a neutral-pH cleaner, or ask us what suits your stone.
Will a sealer make my pool deck slippery?
A penetrating sealer sits in the stone rather than forming a film on top, so it does not add a glossy layer. It is not a slip-resistance treatment, so if that matters on your deck, tell us when you ask for a quote.
Do you fill the holes or replace missing fill?
No. We clean and seal the travertine as it is. Refilling and honing are stonemason jobs, and we will tell you if the stone needs one before sealing.
Why does it take two visits?
The stone, grout and holes have to be dry before sealing. We clean first, let it dry, then come back to seal, timing the second visit around the weather.
Can you do it before Christmas?
Often, but pool decks are popular in spring and we schedule around the forecast. Ask early and we will give you the earliest sensible dates after we have seen photos of the area.
